Leeds United transfer news as Manuel Benson update emerges on Deadline Day

Leeds United signing Burnley forward is “not on the menu” before the 11pm transfer deadline on Thursday, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.

The winger has been a reported target of Championship high-flyers Leeds but Sacha Tavolieri reported on 30 January that he was likely to remain at Burnley following talks with Clarets boss Vincent Kompany.

Smyth was asked by a user on X whether there could be a late surprise and Leeds could make a move but he poured cold water on that suggestion.

Posting on the social media platform, Smyth replied: “Not on the menu right now as we understand it.”

No real surprise

Leeds fans hoping for some last-gasp transfer business will be keeping a close eye on a fellow Clarets player in the form of Connor Roberts, who looks the most likely signing before the 11pm deadline.

But the chances of Benson following his teammate over the pennines to Elland Road looked extremely unlikely and Smyth’s latest update means those increasingly slim chances are now even more unlikely.

Stranger things have happened, of course, and with the clock ticking then who knows if Leeds will make a very, very late attempt to get a deal done but you would have to assume now that Burnley are happy to keep him.

There is still plenty of time for other surprises to happen, though, so if you are a Leeds supporter then – unlike in the past – it probably is worth not going to bed too early because things might stay active until the last second.
