Leeds United transfer news as Luke Thomas approach now made

Leeds United have asked about the possibility of signing Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas on loan for the season, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper shared via its website on 28 August that Leeds have opened talks around the left-back, although Leicester are reluctant to strengthen a direct rival in their bid for promotion from the Championship.

This report comes following The Athletic [28 August] sharing that Leeds would be in the market to sign a new left-back following an injury to current first-choice option Sam Byram.

A good option for Leeds

Despite his tender age of just 22, Thomas has appeared in four separate Premier League seasons for Leicester, with his most appearances coming in the 2021/22 season, where he played 22 games and provided one assist.

Last season, Thomas featured in 17 games for the Foxes as they were surprisingly relegated from the Premier League, but didn’t contribute to a single goal from left-back. He is yet to make an appearance under new boss Enzo Maresca in the Championship.

His age and profile would lend Leeds a different option to their current choices, even upon Byram’s return from an injury that may be set to rule him out for the coming weeks. His ability to overlap and get down the line before crossing the ball in off his left foot could provide Leeds with a new attacking outlet.

Daniel Farke’s insistence on his sides playing out from the back would suit Thomas, who is comfortable in possession combining with the left-sided centre-back and winger to make space and get forwards, and he could suit the way Leeds play perfectly.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has revealed the club are set to move for another full-back.
