Leeds United transfer news as Liam Cooper could quit before Cardiff City clash
Leeds United captain Liam Cooper could ditch the club before the Championship season opener against Cardiff City on Sunday 06 August, according to talkSPORT.
The digital news outlet reported via its Twitter account that Cooper, who is about to begin his tenth season at Elland Road, is weighing up a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side Al Qadsiah to leave the club this week.
The Saudi Arabian club are managed by former Leeds United player Robbie Fowler, who is keen on bringing Cooper to the club, despite the defender’s statement that he “would never” turn his back on the club.
Losing Cooper would be a big loss
Losing the club captain just days before the season opener could have a deeper impact on the squad than simply just another player heading out of the door. Cooper is a leader in the dressing room as well as on the pitch and upholds high standards of what it means to play for Leeds.
While his ability may be dwindling, he can certainly cut it at Championship level, and the club will be hoping he continues to do so, as well as the role he plays in guiding the club’s young players as they make the step up.
As well as losing a great leader and presence in the squad, Cooper’s exit would also leave the club with just Charlie Cresswell and Pascal Struijk as their only centre-back options.

While Luke Ayling and new arrival Ethan Ampadu could also play there, they shouldn’t be the answers Leeds turn to to fill the gaps left by outgoing players. Ampadu especially has made it clear that he is targeting a role in centre-midfield.
This news comes shortly following a report in the Yorkshire Evening Post [2 August] that the 49ers are prepared to spend to cover any exiting players at Elland Road with the season about to get underway.
This is one to keep an eye on.
In other Leeds United news, the club may have been handed a transfer boost by new Leicester City revelation.
