Leeds United transfer news as Liam Cooper-Blackburn contract twist emerges

Leeds United defender Liam Cooper and Blackburn Rovers are haggling over the length of the contract, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist reported via his Patreon on 13 July that the Scottish centre-back wants a two-year deal while Blackburn want to make the second campaign an option based on the overall appearances.

While the 32-year-old’s deal at Elland Road is run out, he can continue at the club if he pens an extension.

Nixon wrote: “Blackburn Rovers are negotiating with centre half Liam Cooper about the length of a contract.

“Rovers are keen to land the Leeds United and Scotland defender who is a free agent and could come within their pay budget.

“Cooper is looking for a two year stay while Blackburn wants to make the second season an option based on appearances.”

Liam Cooper can offer depth to the Leeds United side next season

Leeds should consider retaining Cooper due to the depth and experience he brings to the team.

As a seasoned defender with 16 international caps for Scotland, his presence in the squad can provide valuable cover and competition for the starting centre-backs.

His leadership qualities, as evidenced by his role as captain, can also be beneficial in maintaining team morale and cohesion.

Moreover, Cooper’s familiarity with the club and their playing style makes him a reliable option when needed.

His experience in the Premier League and Championship can be crucial in helping Leeds navigate the challenges of the upcoming season.

While Blackburn are interested in signing him, the Whites should weigh the benefits of keeping Cooper against the potential financial implications of offering him a new contract.

Ultimately, retaining Cooper could be a strategic move to ensure the team has sufficient defensive depth to compete in the league.
