Leeds United transfer news as late deadline day Joe Gelhardt exit twist on cards

Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt could well become available before the 11pm transfer deadline should a deal for Queens Park Rangers midfield Ilais Chair be struck, according to Darren Witcoop.

The Sunday Mirror journalist, taking to his personal Twitter account (1 September) shared that the Whites registered an interest in Chair earlier in the summer window and any move could have ramifications on Gelhardt’s future at Elland Road.

TEAMTalk reported via their website on Friday (1 September) that the Whites had rebuffed interest from Ipswich Town and three other clubs who were looking to sign the 21-year-old forward this summer, but the clock is ticking on any potential Leeds decision.

Witcoop tweeted: “For those asking, Leeds registered an interest in Ilias Chair earlier this summer. Lost Sinisterra today. But QPR don’t want to lose Chair so close to deadline.

“Joe Gelhardt potentially one who could be available if any deal is struck but clock ticking.”

Don’t sell

Gelhardt’s potential move to Portman Road had seemed like a slightly strange deal for United to agree to, with it seemingly strengthening a rival in a position in which Leeds United are arguably short, even despite the signing of Joel Piroe.

The forward impressed last season on loan with Sunderland and has featured in every game for the Whites so far this season, scoring against Shrewsbury in the Carabao Cup and will likely continue to be involved throughout the bust Championship schedule.

However, with Piroe an established Championship goalscorer and Farke’s go-to man for goalscoring inspiration this season, Gelhardt’s role will be limited but this will be a long and arduous campaign which the German must have options for and Gelhardt certainly seems the perfect foil for the Dutch hitman.

Also, Gelhardt can feature in a number of positions, especially in behind Piroe should Farke opt for an attacking line-up making the Elland Road academy product a welcome and crucial swiss-army-knife option which is very much needed in the Championship.

The interest in Gelhardt is understandable given his burgeoning talents and potential but those are best served at Elland Road, and it’s why the Whites must reject all last-gasp approaches for his services.
