Leeds United transfer news as late £5m bid made for Darko Gyabi – Phil Hay
Leeds United have received a late £5million bid for Darko Gyabi from Valenciennes in a late twist, according to Phil Hay.
The Athletic journalist reported via his Twitter account on Friday (1 September) that the Whites are considering the bid from the lower-league French club, who have the same owners as Southampton after they had a £4m bid rejected yesterday.
Gyabi had looked likely to be joining Fleetwood Town on a temporary basis for the 2023/24 season, but the new bid from Valenciennes has put the 19-year-old’s future in doubt as the transfer deadline edges closer.
The midfielder joined the ranks at Elland Road last season for £5m last summer and has made one start for the Whites so far this season in the Carabao Cup while making two further appearances from the bench in the early stages of the campaign.
Decision time
Gyabi doesn’t appear to be a regular option for Daniel Farke this season, remaining on the fringes of the first-team at Elland Road and will have likely fallen further down the pecking order as the Whites continue to add to their midfield options this summer.
But the two options on the table of the 19-year-old and Leeds United offer two very different prospects for both the player and the club, with a loan move to Fleetwood allowing the Gyabi to continue his development but return to the fold at Leeds in a year.

A permanent switch may offer more immediate gain for all parties involved, with an extra £5m likely helping any late moves coming into Elland Road be completed in the closing hours of the transfer window with more ease. This is a decision that could go either way in the coming hours.
Hopefully, whatever decision is taken by both Gyabi and Leeds United will benefit the young player in the long term and ensure he can reach the potential that has seen him feature for the Whites at a young age. It would be a shame for the Leeds fans not to see him reach that level at Elland Road.
