Leeds United transfer news as Junior Firpo exit update emerges

Junior Firpo is unlikely to stay at Leeds United if they fail to secure promotion this season, according to Graeme Bailey.

The TBR journalist told Leeds United News on 9 October that the left-back himself will want to play in the top flight.

The Dominican Republic international’s contract at Elland Road runs out at the end of the season.

Bailey said: “I would be surprised personally [if he signed a new deal]. But it will depend on what division Leeds are in, it really does. I think he has been okay for Leeds, but it will depend on whether they go up or not.

“If Leeds don’t go up, he will probably be looking at going to the top-flight himself won’t he to be fair to him. We’ll see on that one, the division will dictate everything really.”

Junior Firpo has every right to leave Leeds United

Like many footballers, Firpo’s ambition to play at the highest level is natural as he was signed by Leeds in the Premier League.

The Championship, while competitive, doesn’t offer the same platform for international visibility and financial rewards as the English top flight.

Given his contract situation, becoming a free agent increases his marketability, potentially attracting interest not only from newly promoted sides but also from established Premier League clubs looking for experienced depth or an upgrade at left-back.

Very few players at Leeds or any Championship club have turned down opportunities to move to the Premier League, especially when their current club fails to secure promotion.

Firpo’s decision would align with career progression, seeking a stage where his skills can be showcased against top competition, likely with a club offering a better financial package and possibly a shot at European competitions.

He’s still only 28 so it’s not like the best days of his career are behind him and could be someone Premier League clubs look at.
