Leeds United told to rethink over Joe Gelhardt after £4m Hull City update

Daniel Farke is going to be spending the summer getting his Leeds United squad in shape for life in the Premier League.

With PSR restrictions to consider, the 49ers will be looking to offload players where they can in order to generate more revenue.

One man who has been linked with a move away is Joe Gelhardt, who spent the second half of the season on loan with Hull City.

However, Leeds have been warned that they may have to rethink their initial plan.

Leeds told to reconsider Gelhardt asking price

With Leeds looking to offload some of the squad this summer, Gelhardt is an easy option to part with given he has failed to live up to his potential.

Furthermore, with a lack of options other than Joel Piroe in front of goal, Farke certainly needs reinforcements.

The Whites have been linked with Jamie Vardy and Callum Wilson, so offloading a current striker would make sense.

It had been reported that the 23-year-old would be available to buy this summer for somewhere in the region of £3-4million, with Hull a potential interested party.

With a contract at Elland Road until 2027, his parent club are eager to offload.

However, speaking to Football League World (4 June), Don Goodman claimed that the Whites should lower their expectations.

He said: “We’ve spoken about Joe Gelhardt before in terms of him being bought by Hull City and he’s done okay.

“I think we’ve described it as okay before, not spectacular, and an outlay of £3-4 million on a player that’s just done okay seems a little bit excessive to me.

“I think that’s the thing that would hold Leeds back in actually getting him off the wage bill is probably a price that not too many teams are going to be prepared to pay.”

Leeds have to be prepared to compromise on Gelhardt

There is no harm with Leeds setting out an initial price tag they expect for Gelhardt, as the 49ers will know what their target is when it comes to money they can generate this summer.

However, Goodman makes a fair point that for someone who is yet to really prove himself in the Championship, it could be a bit of a steep request.

The forward registered five goals and did okay during his loan spell, but it’s fair to say that form isn’t exactly mindblowing either, and the Tigers may feel they want a bit of a smaller risk if going in for him.

Leeds are always able to reduce their initial asking price, though if it does prove to be a stumbling block, this is something that they will have to prepare themselves to do.

If it’s a choice between taking a smaller fee or keeping him on the books, the West Yorkshire outfit will surely be ready to cut ties.
