Leeds United to complete signing of Joel Robles in next 24 hours, announcement could come today

Leeds United are expected to complete the signing of experienced goalkeeper Joel Robles in the next 24 hours, according to the Daily Mail.

The Whites have been in the market for a veteran shot-stopper to provide cover and depth for number one Illan Meslier as well as the even younger Kristoffer Klaesson.

After links with Ben Foster, manager Jesse Marsch has now settled on FA Cup winner Robles to come in on a free transfer with a one-year deal agreed between parties.

The player is expected to complete the deal in the next 24 hours, with official confirmation to come on Monday for the 32-year-old according to the Mail on Sunday [August 7].

Robles has previously played for Wigan and Everton in the Premier League, as well as Atletico Madrid and Real Betis in La Liga.

Leeds’ summer window so far this year has been all about adding exciting talent to the squad with energy and potential but this deal is very different.

Meslier is the undisputed number one goalkeeper at the club but without any competition for places, his development could be expected to stagnate.

By bringing in someone who has been at the top level for several years, it provides great depth and competition and also gives Meslier someone else to learn from and help improve his game.

Marsch gets to add some vital experience to a young squad too, and Robles will automatically join the likes of Liam Cooper, Adam Forshaw, Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling in giving the young players a shoulder to lean on when they need one.

It’s a shrewd signing on a free and offers the team exactly what they need right now, so fans can be very happy to see it get over the line even if he isn’t a big name.
