Leeds United could lose just two star names and still land major boost to FFP situation

Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto are the two star names most likely to leave Leeds United this summer, according to Graham Smyth.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist indicated on the outlet’s website on 14 June that Dutch winger Summerville, 22, was the top of the list as nobody at the club is “making any noise” about being determined to keep him.

As he could go for around £35million the profit margin on his sale “will look very, very good when it comes to P&S headroom” since he only signed for around £1.5m.

According to Smyth, Gnonto, 20, could also go because he wanted to do so a year ago and after an up-and-down season he will likely want to follow his friend out of Elland Road to be in the Premier League or Serie A and get back into the Italy side.

Outside of the two young attackers he said: “Beyond those two I’m not sure I’d be backing any really major or damaging exits and I think that the sale of those two would alleviate any P&S concerns because they will both bring in huge amounts of profit.”

There’s no escaping the fact that the loss of Summerville will be a blow when he scored 21 times last season so that would be major output to replace.

But that is what has got a host of Premier League clubs, including the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, after him this summer and what will likely bring in a substantial fee.

Losing one wide man would necessarily be compounded if his most obvious replacement also went, and Gnonto has shown his quality in flashes over the past two seasons, especially when Jaidon Anthony’s loan is also finished.

However, the Italian was unable to dislodge Dan James from Daniel Farke’s side for much of the campaign until injury hit so would not be impossible to find a substitute for if a decent offer came in.

And if the two sales meant Leeds United could keep hold of homegrown star Archie Gray then it might be considered a sacrifice worth making, especially when the big money brought in from the new Red Bull sponsorship should have helped ease the pressure on the finances as well.
