Leeds United tipped for talks for permanent Joe Rodon transfer with Tottenham by Carlton Palmer
Carlton Palmer believes Leeds United must hold talks with Tottenham about signing Joe Rodon permanently in the summer to get a discount on his fee.
The Whites signed the Wales international on loan last summer and he has been “fantastic” so far in this campaign, establishing himself as a regular under Daniel Farke.
Leeds are interested in signing the defender permanently but with Tottenham reportedly valuing him at around £15m, Palmer believes that “conversations need to be had” to sign him as he is only worth around half that amount.
“It’s reported that Spurs are asking £10 to 15 million for Joe Rodon,” Palmer told Football League World (14 February).
“Joe is currently on loan at Leeds United, he’s having a fantastic season, Leeds are doing well. There was no fee agreed when he went on loan, he is doing really, really well, so Spurs want that type of money.
“Will he go back to Spurs and play in their team? No he won’t.
“I think £10 to 15 million is a lot, a lot of money, so at the end of the season Leeds United are going to have a look at when they get promoted, see where they see it at.
“I think [Rodon’s value] is about £8 million. £10m to £15m is just too much.
“But I think, at the end of the season, should Leeds get promoted, then the conversation needs to be had. He’s done really, really well at Leeds and I think he can step up and play in the Premier League, I really, really do.”
Leeds United must sign Joe Rodon permanently
It’s not often that a loan signing is so successful that you know halfway through the deal that it should turn permanent, but that is the case for Rodon.
The centre-back has become so important to the way Farke wants to play at Elland Road, and with his experience and quality it is a no-brainer that he remains at the club next season.
But ultimately that can only be an option for the club if they secure Premier League football for themselves, because there will no doubt be top-flight clubs showing an interest in him after the way he has performed this season.

Spurs will know there is a market and are likely to try and make the most out of that by demanding a higher price, but Leeds will be able to compete and will surely have the edge in talks.
Ideally the club will find a way to secure a deal before the window even opens, but it’s going to be a difficult window if promotion isn’t sealed so that must be the priority first.
