Leeds target Nick Pope faces uncertain future after Newcastle transfer offer

Leeds United are expected to sign a new goalkeeper this summer amid concerns over their current crop.

Illan Meslier was Daniel Farke’s number one for most of the season, but lost his place after a series of errors.

Karl Darlow is another option Farke has at his disposal, although he is considered a backup option at Elland Road.

With that in mind, Leeds have been linked with a move for Newcastle United number one Nick Pope, who faces an uncertain future in the North East.

Pope set for fresh competition at Newcastle United

If Meslier’s season could be encapsulated in one moment, it would be the clanger the Frenchman dropped against Sunderland.

While that error is effectively meaningless now, it sums up how awful the shot-stopper has been at times for Leeds. That is why Farke is on the hunt for a new number one, with Pope a man who has been linked with the Yorkshire outfit.

Pope has been Eddie Howe’s number one for some time, but the Magpies are looking to add competition between the sticks.

Newcastle had an offer rejected for Burnley’s James Trafford last summer, but are expected to return for the 22-year-old, according to The Athletic (10 June).

Given that Burnley are now a Premier League outfit, Trafford’s value has risen, but he remains a top target for Howe.

The Athletic reiterates that Howe is keen to keep Pope. However, they recognise that the Englishman has been linked with an exit.

Leeds United can offer Pope the number one shirt at Elland Road

While Pope may be given reassurances on his future, this feels like an Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson situation.

Inevitably, if the Magpies sign Trafford, then Pope will eventually be pushed out to make way for the future star. There is enough of an argument to suggest that Trafford is, in fact, a stronger goalkeeper than Pope is now.

This will play into Leeds’ hands as they can offer Pope the number one shirt and consistent first-team football.

Another point Pope must consider is England.

As it stands, Pope is not a guarantee to venture to the World Cup, with Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, and Trafford his competition. By signing for the Peacocks, Pope can showcase his ability in goal, where he would certainly be kept busy.
