Leeds United striker set for loan move to English club after outstanding scoring run

Luca Thomas could be set for a loan move away from Leeds United with York City interested in a deal, Joe Donnohue reports.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post journalist via X on 16 October the Whites’ youngster making a temporary move is on the cards midseason, having been tipped to attract interest within the EFL via the YEP’s website on 18 September.

The 20-year-old attacker trained with Daniel Farke’s first-team group during the preseason and has been in outstanding form for the Under-21s this term, scoring in every one of his five appearances to total six goals and an assist.

Luca Thomas set for York City loan from Leeds United

Based on his record so far this term it certainly looks like Thomas has outgrown Premier League 2 and some senior action is what he needs.

Given his age it might have been preferable for him to go out and gain some first-team experience before now.

According to the YEP he signed a contract extension in the summer which kept him attached to Leeds United until the end of the season, but he will presumably need to impress at York City to get another new deal.

He may be a late bloomer who is making significant steps now that he has exited his teens and if Farke had him around the first-team in preseason the German likely sees something in the versatile forward.

He is just a year younger than Mateo Joseph who has graduated into the first-team set up, and is arguably first choice so far this season.

The Spain Under-21 international impressed in restricted action last term and despite just one goal so far this season he hasn’t looked out of place in the senior side and netted a hat-trick during the international break.

Two seasons ago the Whites looked like they had an avalanche of firepower set to break through with both Joseph and Sonny Perkins scoring regularly for the Under-21s, but while the former has made the step up the latter’s development has somewhat stalled as he is now on loan at Leyton Orient, having spent an unsuccessful spell at Oxford United last term.

So Thomas will have some catching up to do to follow in the footsteps of the Spaniard rather than the Englishman.

In other Leeds United news, Red Bull’s designs on the Whites will become clear with a Jurgen Klopp making an appearance at the club.
