Leeds United stance on transfer for Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics emerges

Leeds United are unlikely pay the asking price for Blackburn striker Sammie Szmodics this summer, according to Alan Nixon.

Writing on his personal X account (31 May), the newspaper journalist reported that several clubs are interested in the 23/24 Golden Boot winner in the Championship but they are waiting on a price from Blackburn before making their move.

A fan then asked if Leeds were one of the interested clubs and while he didn’t confirm or deny, he did reveal that a deal was unlikely.

“Can’t see them reaching the price,” he wrote.

Leeds United need a new striker this summer

Scoring goals was hardly a problem for the Whites in this past season, but the lack of a natural and reliable number nine was something they lacked at times and could have been the difference between promotion and Championship football.

Patrick Bamford’s injury problems persisted over the course of the season, although he emerged as first-choice in the second half of the campaign, while there are question marks about Joel Piroe after his first season at Elland Road [YEP, 29 May].

So it’s clear that a new striker is going to be targeted and is needed, but whether Szmodics is the right man to pursue remains to be seen.

While he was the league and FA Cup top goalscorer for the season, that was an anomaly of a season according to his career so far and he is 28-years-old now.

Blackburn are likely to ask for a big fee considering his performances, and Leeds can probably get better options for a similar amount that will suit Daniel Farke’s system more so this is one that is unlikely to come to fruition.

In other Leeds news, the club want to sign this “unbelievable” striker with 51 goals in the last two seasons.
