Leeds United stance on £15m Jonathan Rowe transfer mooted amid Norwich City exit update

Graham Smyth has admitted he doesn’t know if Leeds United would be willing to pay £15million to sign Norwich City attacker Jonathan Rowe.

Daniel Farke’s side are reportedly keen to bring the Canaries winger to Elland Road this summer, with reports suggesting they are already preparing an improved offer to tempt him away from Carrow Road [Sky Sports, 8 August].

Although the exact details of this new offer are unknown, Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Smyth believes Norwich will be looking for a fee in the region of £13million before sanctioning a sale.

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast (8 August, 20:25) he said: “My take on it is, there will be a number at which Norwich will go yeah, we’ve done alright here.

“He’s got a year left, plus the option and he doesn’t want to stay. We don’t want an unhappy player, let’s get rid of him and let’s take somewhere in the region of £12million to £14million.

“I don’t know if Leeds would go to £15million for Rowe.”

Will Jonathan Rowe exit Norwich City amid Leeds United transfer speculation?

Leeds United have money to spend this summer having sold both Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray for big fees, so matching Norwich’s asking price won’t be an issue for Daniel Farke’s side.

What will be a problem however is the fact that everybody knows that the Whites have loads of money to spend, therefore the asking price for every single one of their targets is going to grow until the window slams shut.

The Whites will have to pay a premium if they decide to sign Rowe, but that doesn’t mean that they have to decide to pursue a deal for him. If they’re priced out of a transfer they can turn their attention to other targets.

£15million is a lot of money for a player who only has a year left on his deal. Maybe the Whites could reach that fee in potential add-ons, but they are unlikely to hand over that sort of money upfront.

It will be interesting to see how the final stages of this transfer play out.
