Leeds United sniff around Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo in late transfer move

Leeds United will need to pay £2million to sign Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo, according to Football Scotland.

Writing on their website [19 August], the outlet reported that Leeds are sniffing around after Rangers slapped the price tag on the Welshman.

Daniel Farke is still in the market for replacements for Crysencio Summerville heading into the final weeks of the transfer window.

Will Leeds United sign Rabbi Matondo?

Leeds have endured a tough start to the 2024/25 season with a disappointing 3-3 draw to Portsmouth on the opening day of the Championship and were eliminated from the EFL Cup at the hands of Middlesbrough in a 3-0 defeat at Elland Road.

The Whites were many people’s favourites for the title heading into the new season but departures of their prized stars derailed their progress at the start of the campaign.

Farke needs to accelerate his transfer plans with less than a fortnight left until the 30 August transfer deadline, with limited options available on the market, he could be forced into making stop-gap purchases to plug the holes in his side.

Matondo was a regular starter with a reasonable return of six goals and four assists across 31 appearances for Rangers last season but now finds himself available at cut-price cost.

While the Whites were considered uninterested in the 23-year-old [Joe Donnohue] it seems that the £2m price tag may spark their interest in the forward and the deal could enable the club to spend big on another addition to the front line.

Leeds have a monumental task of replacing Summerville and Rutter and one big-money signing will be required, two ideally, but time is of the essence and a cut-price move for Matondo could lead to a statement signing in the coming weeks.
