Leeds United: Sheffield Wednesday have ‘high hopes’ of permanent Ian Poveda transfer

Sheffield Wednesday have “high hopes” of securing a permanent deal for Leeds United winger Ian Poveda in the summer after he joined on a short-term loan in January, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The newspaper reported via their website on 8 February that a permanent transfer was initially discussed in January, but with a new deal yet to materialise at Elland Road, a loan deal was struck.

This comes after Wednesday boss Danny Rohl confessed that the club will be discussing their options for the summer in the coming weeks, with several decisions to be made as soon as possible to convince Poveda to stay.

“Now we will start to prepare for the summer,” Rohl told the media when asked about the winger, “That means to look for our players, to extend contracts, to speak with them and look for new options in the summer.

“We have to make the decision. If we are convinced on players then we have to move and do it as soon as possible and get players we can take in the future.”

Leeds United transfer news at Elland Road

The January transfer window closed just one week ago, yet speculation and conversations about deals to take place in the summer have already begun, with Poveda the latest subject of those conversations.

When the Colombian originally departed Elland Road on deadline day, talkSPORT journalist Ben Jacobs shared that the club were “very happy” to lose him, so the news of a potential permanent deal will probably be music to their ears.

Poveda’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, so in a similar deal to Luke Ayling who departed for Middlesbrough, Leeds sought to move him on a short-term basis without offering a new deal, spelling an end to his time at the club.

This, for the buying clubs, is a way of securing the deal they want with a view to a permanent deal earlier than they would usually be able to, without paying a fee in January, as players cannot discuss domestic moves before the end of their existing deal.
