Leeds United set to miss out on Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn
Norwich City are set to beat Leeds United to the signing of Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn, according to The Mirror.
The newspaper claims the Whites emerged as late competition to hijack Norwich’s signing of Gunn, 25, to add to their goalkeeper options ahead of next season.
However, The Mirror reports that the Canaries are set to complete a £5million swoop for their former goalkeeper next week.
Not a big loss
Leeds have Illan Meslier as their number one goalkeeper for the foreseeable future so we don’t need a new starting shot-stopper any time soon.
However, we could do with a stronger back-up option as second-choice ‘keeper Kiko Casilla needs to be released by Leeds this summer.
We’ve always been opposed to the Spaniard.
Not only was he banned for racist abuse but his performances have been consistently woeful and it’s about time he’s moved on by the club.
Some fans will point to Casilla playing well when Meslier missed a couple of Premier League matches this season but can anyone remember the Crawley defeat in the FA Cup? Or the Derby play-off defeat? Or the countless other Championship matches where a mistake by him led to a goal?
Gunn would be a better option than Casilla as a second-choice goalkeeper but for £5million, we might as well save the money and hold out for a free agent or something.
But, knowing Leeds and knowing Marcelo Bielsa, he probably wants to keep Casilla because he doesn’t like to change the playing squad too much and he clearly still rates the ex-Real Madrid goalkeeper.
In other Leeds United news, this Leeds player transfer has fallen through and Victor Orta is in talks over a last-ditch agreement.
