Leeds United set to confirm another big signing imminently
Leeds United have already signed Helder Costa this summer and are set to confirm a permanent deal for goalkeeper Illan Meslier on Thursday.
After spending £16m on Costa, Leeds are now set to spend another £5m on Meslier.
Meslier’s loan deal will end after the final game of the season against Charlton but he will be a Leeds player by tomorrow night.
Talking in an interview with Ouest France, Meslier himself confirmed the move saying, “I will sign Thursday for three years with Leeds, it’s a great story.
“In Lorient, I was the number two choice in August 2019 (after the arrival of Paul Nardi). I had to make a choice. I always believed in it and I had the opportunity to prove myself in Leeds and it paid off.”
Meslier arrived on loan from FC Lorient last summer and waited patiently for his Leeds debut, finally starting against Arsenal in the FA Cup in January.
He shone in that game, wowing the Leeds fans with his incredible confidence in distribution.
Meslier showed off his full range of passing in that game and some Leeds fans wanted him to play in the Championship from then on instead of Kiko Casilla.
However, it took an eight-game ban for Casilla to be deposed and Meslier has started nine games since then, helping Leeds to promotion with six clean sheets.
Casilla started against Derby on Sunday but we fully expect Meslier to start against Charlton tonight to set up a battle for the gloves over the summer.
Casilla was banned for racially abusing Charlton’s Jonathan Leko and we just can’t see a situation where Leeds would think it’s a good idea for him to be involved tonight.
We think Meslier has a great chance of being the number one next season. He’s taken his chances and has impressed former Leeds keeper and MOT Leeds News columnist Paul Robinson.
