Leeds United seal out-of-window goalkeeper transfer
Leeds United continue to add to their ranks despite the winter transfer window closing on 3 February.
The Whites did not sign any first-team players in January despite them needing to strengthen to further strengthen their quest to seal promotion.
However, on 6 February, it was reported that winger Brooklyn Nfonkeu has moved to Elland Road on loan from Manchester City. (LUFC Youth)
Robbie Cook is not expected to provide competition to Illan Meslier
Now, the Whites have gone on to seal another signing with the club confirming on 7 February that Robbie Cook had joined on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
The much sought-after 18-year-old moved to Elland Road from Perth Glory and he’s already represented Australia at the Under-20s level.
The acquisition of Cook is a strategic move that bolsters the club’s goalkeeping department.
At just 18, Cook arrives with international experience, which is a promising sign for his development potential.
While his signing won’t immediately challenge Illan Meslier for the first-team spot, it represents a long-term investment in the club’s future.
Leeds United have to find an upgrade on Illan Meslier
Meslier’s performances have been inconsistent, often leaving his teammates in precarious situations, which has highlighted the need for competition or a potential upgrade in the goalkeeping position, especially if the Whites secure promotion to the Premier League.
Cook’s arrival provides Leeds with a young goalkeeper who can learn from the Frenchman’s experiences, both good and bad and grow under the tutelage of the club’s coaching staff.
This signing does not put immediate pressure on Meslier but serves as a reminder that the club is planning for the future.
If the 24-year-old does not improve, Cook’s progression could offer Leeds an internal solution rather than looking externally for a new goalkeeper.

Ideally, the Whites should bring in a first-choice keeper in the summer and do their best to cash in on Meslier.
