Leeds United: Robin Koch makes exit confession after latest international development

Robin Koch has admitted the decision to leave Leeds United last summer has been worth it after he was called up to the German national team last week.

The defender left Elland Road on loan and has already agreed to a permanent move to loan club Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer when his Leeds contract expires.

His performances in the Bundesliga this season led to permanent transfer talks almost immediately after he arrived, and have now earned him an international call from Julian Nagelsmann.

Speaking to Sport Bild [19 March], Koch admitted: “For that reason alone, the change [leaving Leeds] was worth it, you could say that.

“Even before the international break in October, he told me that my good performances had put me on the radar. I was scheduled for the international matches in November but had to cancel due to injury. But even then the exchange was very good and the trainer sent me one or two video scenes.”

Robin Koch speaks out on Leeds United exit

After Koch’s permanent move to Germany was confirmed, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay shared that the defender would understand the anger and frustration of fans at Elland Road to the way he left after the Premier League relegation.

He had, however, been especially vocal about his desire to secure a permanent move to Germany during his loan spell, which only added further fuel to the fire as far as the frustration at Elland Road goes.

Koch was among several players to make a swift exit at the earliest given opportunity following the relegation from the Premier League, alongside the likes of Max Wober and Brenden Aaronson who have also fallen out of favour with the fans as a result.

His latest confession, albeit an honest and candid one about his exit, will point further towards the fact that, as soon as Leeds were relegated, his heart was never really in it, and it was better for all parties to secure a permanent move away.
