Leeds United return 'at last moment' for Bamba Dieng transfer, player rejects move
Leeds returned “at the last moment” to try and sign Bamba Dieng again this month, but the player isn’t interested in a move, according to Mohamed Toubache-Ter.
The Whites were really close to sealing a deal for Dieng on deadline day in the summer, only for the player to perform a U-turn at the airport in favour of a move for Nice and then fail his medical and be stuck at Marseille.
But the player is now set to leave again, with FC Lorient close to sealing a deal, but according to Toubache-Ter who is close to elite players (L’Equipe, Sept 2021) Leeds made a late bid again.
“On the Bamba Dieng file, Leeds but especially Everton came at the last moment,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account (25 January).
“The player and his representative had a clear position: the Lorient project & the playing time.”
It would be very weird for the club to go back in for a player who really embarrassed the club a few months ago, but even moreso because we’re stronger now than we were then.
Dieng was a last minute alternative after the deal for Cody Gakpo collapsed, but when it didn’t happen we moved on to Willy Gnonto and got that deal over the line at the death.
He has gone on to become a regular in the first-team squad and even broken into Jesse Marsch’s starting lineup in recent weeks, also becoming a fan favourite in the process.
Then we added Georginio Rutter to the squad too and as a record signing he will no doubt be a factor in the lineup sooner rather than later.
Realistically there isn’t much space for Dieng in the current squad without an exit or two, and that seems unlikely, so we’ll chalk this one up as unlikely at best.
