Leeds United respond to Joel Piroe exit update as Gustavo Hamer swap deal emerges
Leeds United “categorically deny” that they have offered Joel Piroe to Sheffield United as part of a last-minute swap deal, according to Graham Smyth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported via X on Thursday (29 August) that the Whites insist they have not offered the Dutchman as part of a late deal to sign Gustavo Hamer before the 30 August deadline.
Reports emerged from the Sheffield Star (29 August) to suggest that Daniel Farke’s side were willing to offer Piroe as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Hamer after their initial £13million bid was turned down.
Will Joel Piroe exit Leeds United amid Gustavo Hamer transfer rumours?
Leeds United have acted very quickly to quell speculation around this potential swap deal and it will likely never be known if there was such an offer made to the Blades to try and tempt them into parting ways with Hamer.
Piroe finds himself in a very strange position currently at Elland Road. Having only been signed last summer, nobody is still quite sure what his best position is, or whether or not he is good enough to cut it under Farke.
When he has played in attacking midfield, he has lacked the composure or class on the ball to play a defence-splitting pass or pick out a teammate and when he has led the line he has been guilty of being incredibly wasteful.
If Leeds were able to get him off of their books and sign Hamer before the window slams shut, most supporters would probably consider that smart business, but such a deal seems unlikely to occur at this stage.
It will be interesting to see whether the Whites return with another offer for the Blades midfielder. They seem very keen to get him out of Bramall Lane, but time is running out for them to get their man.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are closing in on the signing of a new fullback who is due to play in Europe on Thursday night
