South Africa international centre-back Khuliso Mudau has emerged as a transfer target for Leeds United this summer, according to Soccer Laduma.

The South African publication reported that the Whites and fellow Championship side Burnley are interested in the Mamelodi Sundowns defender, saying Leeds had sent out scouts to watch Mudau play.

The Sundowns are yet to open talks with Leeds over a prospective transfer for Mudau, who has also been watched by Elland Road representatives on international duty with Bafana Bafana.

29-year-old Mudau would likely act as a replacement for Tottenham loanee Joe Rodon at Elland Road and recently played for South Africa in their draw and victory against Nigeria and Zimbabwe respectively.

Leeds looking for another successful South African transfer

Leeds' number one priority in this summer's transfer window is - and should be - securing Rodon on a permanent deal from Spurs, but the Whites' failure to achieve Premier League promotion and emerging interest in Turkey could complicate the deal [Alasdair Gold].

Charlie Cresswell also looks set to be on the way out and captain Liam Cooper could join him on a free transfer, leaving a dearth of options in central defence [Carlton Palmer].

Leeds United could turn to Khuliso Mudau if they fail to sign Joe Rodon from Tottenham this summer.

The last time the Peacocks looked to the Southern tip of Africa for a centre-half came up trumps, signing club legend and future captain Lucas Radebe in 1994.

Phil Masinga, who arrived with Radebe, and injury-hit striker David Somma had less successful spells, and signing Mudau would be the latest chapter in the connection between Leeds and South Africa.

Circumstances are undoubtedly different this time around - Mudau would be a relatively senior figure coming straight into the thick of a Championship promotion battle - but if the defender can replicate his Sundowns and international form in West Yorkshire, he'll be another South African hit at Elland Road.
