Leeds told to pull off ‘massive’ Raheem Sterling signing in Arsenal transfer

Leeds United are still vying to win the Championship title after clinching promotion to the Premier League.

With just two games remaining, the Whites sit level on points with second-place Burnley, who ensured that both sides will ply their trade in the top-flight next term at Sheffield United’s expense via their 2-1 win over the Blades on Monday.

But while the Elland Road club battle the Clarets for silverware, their main attention will turn to preparing themselves for life in next season’s Premier League.

With that in mind, it is pivotal that the Whites enjoy a strong summer transfer window regardless of whether they choose to keep or sack Daniel Farke.

Paul Merson tells Leeds United to sign Raheem Sterling

As Leeds look to retain their Premier League status next season, the West Yorkshire giants will look to sign players with proven top-flight experience.

Sterling has endured a lack of game time at Arsenal

Paul Merson told Sky Sports that the Whites should sign Raheem Sterling, currently on loan with Arsenal from Chelsea: “If I was Leeds United, I’d be looking at Raheem’s experience.

“They’re a young team, Leeds. They like to play attacking football. He’s very good in the dressing room, good team player. He’s got all the experience in the world, won Premier Leagues.

“For me, that wouldn’t be a bad move for Leeds and for Raheem Sterling, again going to a massive, huge club. The expectations are not as high, if they finish 17th next year Leeds, they’ve pulled up trees.”

Sterling has made just six Premier League starts for Arsenal this season, failing to score a goal in a total of 15 appearances.

Sterling signing could go either way for Leeds

If Leeds choose to follow Merson’s advice and sign Sterling, it could go either way for the West Yorkshire outfit.

On the one hand, the former England international boasts bags of Premier League experience and won four top-flight titles in his time with Manchester City.

Sterling also has 82 England caps to his name and played a particularly important role in the Three Lions side that reached the Euro final under Gareth Southgate in the summer of 2021.

A player with that kind of pedigree should have what it takes to help Leeds in their quest to achieve Premier League survival next season.

He notched 10 goals and eight assists in all competitions for Chelsea just last season, but it is evident that he has lost his way since joining the Gunners and has endured a lack of game time.

There is a risk that Sterling could head to Elland Road with a lack of confidence, while he is no longer the prolific player he was in his Man City days.
