Leeds United problem area identified as transfer update emerges

Leeds United could opt to bring in cover for the centre-back position in the upcoming transfer windows, according to The Athletic.

Nancy Froston wrote for the news outlet [29 November] that the Whites might decide to reinforce the defensive position owing to the lack of depth in the squad.

Max Wober and James Debayo back up Daniel Farke’s first-choice pairing of Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk, while Ethan Ampadu and Josuha Guilavogui are also capable of playing that role.

Froston said Leeds will only enter the market if “strictly necessary” but that centre-back would be an area they look to strengthen.

Daniel Farke needs more options at Leeds United

While Leeds needs more numbers in their squad, they need to ensure that the players being brought in have the necessary quality to match the West Yorkshire club’s ambitions.

The Whites are looking to attain promotion to the Premier League and are on course to do so, sitting at the top of the Championship table after their 3-0 win over Luton Town on 27 November.

Farke has already had to rely on players in the squad he usually wouldn’t have called upon as much after the injuries to Ampadu and Ilia Gruev.

Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka have ensured that the Peacocks’ hopes of maintaining their position around the top of the league table weren’t hampered by fitness issues.

The German manager has been lucky that Rodon and Struijk haven’t been sidelined in the last few months, with Wober only returning from injury recently.

Debayo is still young and can’t be expected to play a pivotal role at Elland Road in the current campaign.

While the 49ers have done well by easing the PSR constraints at Leeds [The Athletic], they now need to put their hands in their pocket and give Farke more tools to work with.
