Leeds United owner hints at Cody Gakpo move with PSV prepared to sell £38.4m winger
PSV Eindhoven are prepared to sell winger Cody Gakpo with Leeds United and Everton chasing him after Southampton had a bid rejected, The Telegraph reports.
The Dutch side are ready to let 23-year-old go if their valuation of €45million is met, after rejecting an offer well short of that from the Saints, of around €25million.
Manchester United were previously chasing the Dutch international but are now out of the race after agreeing a €100million move for Ajax’s Antony instead.
Gakpo has been linked to an Elland Road move throughout the transfer window as the club are known to like him, but according to the Telegraph report they are now in a late race to actually sign him before the deadline.
Adding further intrigue to the final days of the transfer window is the fact that Whites owner Andrea Radrizzani liked a Tweet citing the story, suggesting he is well aware of the situation.
Jesse Marsch has admitted United are looking for a forward before the window shuts, but Tottenham have been credited with interest in current Whites winger Dan James.
Misdirection
There was apparently big money to spend on Charles De Ketelaere but it went nowhere because the Belgian wanted to go to AC Milan, which he did.
More recently the club appears to have rowed back on their position towards spending big on a final attacking piece, but Rodrigo’s injury in the draw with Everton on Tuesday (30 August) has thrown that up in the air for the final hours of the window.
A central attacker seems to be much more important at this stage, considering the excellent form of James Harrison out wide, and big-money arrival from Feyenoord Luis Sinisterra netting his first in the Premier League against the Toffees.
Leeds appeared to be ready to bat away any offers from Spurs to take James to north London, but if they are back in the race for Gakpo then perhaps there has been a change of heart.
Surely most fans would prefer to add the Dutchman and let the Welsh flyer go if there was some decent money in it, while Radrizzani’s social media activity could be read any number of ways.
There is some frustration among the fanbase about the accuracy of the messages coming out of Elland Road in terms of what money is available to spend and their willingness to spend it.
The latest news on Gakpo plus the owner’s reaction to it suggests there is an answer on the horizon that will either greatly please or further antagonise supporters, but unless he is to arrive alongside Hwang Hee-chan it would still leave the striker spot short.
In other Leeds United news, the club are after another talented attacking player from the Eredivisie who numerous teams want this summer.
