Leeds United now have perfect chance to sign Manuel Benson as Vincent Kompany drops Burnley ‘rumours’

Leeds United now have the chance to sign Manuel Benson after Vincent Kompany has made a transfer admission on the exit-linked Burnley ace.

Mike McGrath tweeted on Wednesday (31 January) that the 26-year-old could leave Turf Moor on deadline day (1 February) after he was omitted from the Premier League side’s squad for their 3-1 defeat against Manchester City on Wednesday.

The Daily Telegraph journalist shared a quote from the Clarets boss on the Belgian winger after the game, where he revealed there have been rumours about him leaving the club this month.

“There were rumours about him going on loan, it is normal he wants to play and we will see how it resovles itself,” said Kompany.

It’s been a strange season for Benson after many thought he would adapt well to the Premier League on the back of an excellent first year at Burnley.

After making the move to Lancashire from Royal Antwerp in 2022, he scored 14 goals and laid on five assists in 39 appearances.

He was one of the Championship’s best players as he helped the Clarets achieve an immediate return back to the Premier League under Kompany.

But Benson has rather bizarrely only started one Premier League game this season and has made only four top-flight appearances, where he failed to register a goal or an assist.

He’s only been named in the squad twice since September, with his last outing coming as a late substitute in the defeat to Everton in December.

That is why the winger has been heavily linked with a move away from Turf Moor this month, with several Championship clubs eyeing a move for him.

He is believed to be one of the players on Daniel Farke’s list as he looks to try and secure some last-minute deals to strengthen his squad.

The Whites boss has been adamant that he only wants to bring players in who would add to the quality he already has at his disposal.

While he does have plenty of superb options in the attacking positions, Benson would complement some of those players and would provide depth in case any of the regular starters were to pick up an injury.

There are sure to be several clubs on high alert about the Belgian’s availability following Kompany’s comments, but it’s time for Farke to make a move to secure a player who could play a role in the club’s promotion push this season.

In other Leeds United news, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Whites are set to make an offer for a mystery defender.
