Leeds United move for Joel Robles could mean Kristoffer Klaesson leaves Elland Road on loan

Leeds United are closing in on the signing of 32-year-old goalkeeper Joel Robles and that could mean young goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson leaves the club on loan.

Jesse Marsch has been on the lookout for a new keeper to rival Illan Meslier at Elland Road and the Yorkshire Evening Post reported (4 August) that Leeds are closing in on free agent Robles.

The former Everton man is a free agent after leaving Real Betis this at the start of July.

Robles’ arrival in Yorkshire could well see 21-year-old Klaesson leave the club on loan this summer in order to gain some much-needed first-team football.

Klaesson joined Leeds in the summer of 2021 from Vålerenga and has only featured once for the Whites’ first team.

He has spent most of his time in Yorkshire in Leeds’ under-23 system having played 22 games in the 2021/22 season.

The youngster should now be looking to gain first-team experience.

At 21, he is approaching a vital part of his career where he needs to be playing week in and week out in front of larger crowds to really get used to the pressure and physicality of first-team football.

If he continues to stay in the under-23 system at Leeds and then is thrown into first-team proceedings at Elland Road then it will be a shock to the system for Klaesson.

Gavin Bazunu’s loan spell in League One in the 2021/22 season should be a good example for Klaesson to display how making the move to an EFL club can benefit a young keeper in the long term.

Bazunu is now a Premier League keeper after making a £15million switch from Manchester City to Southampton.

With the arrival of a new keeper at Elland Road, it should be an easy decision for Marsch to let Klaesson leave the club on a temporary basis

In other Leeds United news, a 29-year-old has snubbed interest from Europe to move to Elland Road with the move subject to a work permit.
