Leeds United may be forced into Crysencio Summerville sale as Aston Villa interest mooted

Stephen Warnock believes Leeds United will likely have to cash in on Crysencio Summerville if they miss out on promotion to the Premier League.

Summerville has been linked with a number of top-flight clubs, most recently Liverpool, but Warnock reckons a team like Aston Villa could suit the Dutchman.

The 22-year-old, who has 28 goal involvements in the Championship this term, joined Leeds from Feyenoord in 2020 and is under contract at Elland Road until 2026.

Discussing Summerville’s future with Football League World [1 May], Sky Sports pundit Warnock said: “I think it all depends on if Leeds go back up to the Premier League or stay in the Championship.

“I think if they stay in the Championship, I think it’s something Leeds will have to do is cash in on him to make sure that financially they’re secure for however long they need to be to be able to push on and to probably strengthen the squad ready for next year in the Championship.

“They stand a better chance of holding onto him if they go up. The nice thing is: when you go up, there’s a feeling that you’re going to play because of what you’ve done in the previous season.

“However, Leeds fans will hate me for saying this, but if you have got a club like Aston Villa, and a manager like Unai Emery, and you’re in the Champions League positions – obviously speculating that they finish in the Champions League position – then that’s a big thing to turn down, it really is.”

Warnock added: “[He’s] certainly a player that both Leeds will want to keep hold of, but would also be an exciting addition for someone like Aston Villa.”

Crysencio Summerville’s Leeds United future in the balance

It is widely accepted that Summerville’s future at Leeds is dependent on what division the Whites are in come this time next month.

If Leeds go up, Summerville will then play a huge part in the club’s hopes of staying in the Premier League next season.

Should Daniel Farke’s men fall short, though, then player sales will have to be considered, and Summerville seems ripe for picking.

Crysencio Summerville managed over 30 goals and assists combined for Leeds United last season

That would be an almighty blow for Farke considering the Dutchman has scored 19 goals and assisted nine more in 42 league games in 2023-24.

United will aim to bring in some quality players to offset the departures, but there is surely nobody out there who can replace Summerville.

Right now, however, we still have no idea what division Leeds will be in and therefore cannot accurately predict Summerville’s future.
