Leeds United make verbal offer to Liam Cooper as contract update emerges at Elland Road

Leeds United are yet to make a concrete contract offer to Liam Cooper, according to Graham Smyth.

The reliable journalist wrote via the Yorkshire Evening Post on Wednesday (7 August) that the Whites have only made a verbal offer of what they would be willing to consider offering in principle.

The money involved would be less than Cooper could reasonably expect to earn in EFL League One. Despite talks taking place, no contract offer has been made or rejected.

Cooper is attracting interest from a pair of Championship clubs and is also considering a move abroad.

Leeds United to table concrete contract offer to Liam Cooper?

This is an incredibly difficult situation for the Whites. If the club are thinking with their hearts, they would no doubt love to offer Cooper a new deal.

Cooper would be celebrating a decade with Leeds on 13 August, with the former club captain a huge part of the club’s modern history.

However, if the club are thinking with their heads, it would perhaps be wise to avoid offering the 32-year-old fresh terms.

Cooper was a bit-part player under Daniel Farke last season and although he has a strong emotional connection with the club, it might be best for him to move on from Elland Road.

He is unlikely to be a key player for the Whites this season, which is reflected in the fact that he is yet to be made a concrete contract offer.

While it would no doubt be an emotional goodbye, perhaps now is the time for Cooper to explore a new opportunity as he begins to come toward the end of this career.

In other Leeds United news, the club have made a transfer decision on one player after a bid was made.
