Leeds United make Ian Poveda, Sam Byram announcements as retained list published

Leeds United have published their retained list on the back of the 2023-24 season.

The Whites confirmed on their official website on Friday (7 June) that a one-year extension has been triggered in Sam Byram’s contract.

Ian Poveda is one of 11 out-of-contract players to be released, while Liam Cooper and Jamie Shackleton are in talks over extending their stays at Elland Road.

Many felt that Poveda still had a part to play at Leeds, but the club clearly feel otherwise and he is now free to find another club.

A couple of Championship clubs have been linked, including Sunderland, so you would expect he will be at a new home in no time.

Poveda was loved by Marcelo Bielsa, who regularly talked up the youngster, but we have now seen the last of him in a Leeds shirt.

As was already known, Luke Ayling’s contract was not extended and he has already put pen to paper at Middlesbrough, where he spent part of last season on loan.

The others released include Charlie Allen, Lewis Bate, Keenan Carole, Cuba Diboe, Scott Godden, Harvey Sutcliffe, Dani van den Heuvel and Morten Spencer.

Last but not least on the list is Stuart Dallas, who had already previously confirmed his retirement due to injury issues.

Many of those departures will not raise an eyebrow, while others have already had various tributes paid to them.

We must now await to see whether Shackleton and/or Cooper agree to fresh terms, or if they opt to seek pastures new this summer.
