Leeds United make official approach for Ben Johnson transfer as FFP update drops

Leeds United and Millwall have both approached West Ham about a potential January deal to sign full-back Ben Johnson, according to Football Transfers.

The transfer news website reported on 22 January that both Championship sides have spoken to West Ham about a possible move, with the Hammers needing to sell for Financial Fair Play reasons.

This has come while West Ham are targeting incoming deals, with those deals likely hinging on outgoing players, and Leeds are able to offer an exit route for Johnson.

One to watch

A move to Leeds for Johnson was recently described as “one to watch” in a report by The Mirror [18 January], and after contact has been made between the two clubs, the deal is beginning to look more likely.

The report also claimed that a run in the Hammers’ side as a result of their ongoing injury issues could result in the defender being offered a new deal in East London.

While it may well be Johnson’s intention to remain at West Ham for the long haul, and that decision could come down to whether or not he can impress those at the top in East London, Leeds should be in his ear trying to convince him that a move to Elland Road would be best.

Leeds will have the edge over Millwall with their chase for promotion gathering pace, as well as the ability to offer higher wages than their opponent due to their recent place in the Premier League and subsequent parachute payments.
