Leeds United make approach to sign Junior Firpo replacement in new transfer

Leeds United have explored a move to sign PEC Zwolle left-back Anselmo Garcia MacNulty to replace Junior Firpo, according to Estadio Deportivo.

Writing on their website (18 July), the Spanish news outlet reports that the Whites have looked into signing the Irish Under-21 international.

Firpo is wanted by Real Betis and is willing to make a financial effort [ABC, 16 July] to push through a move, forcing the Elland Road club to look at alternatives with MacNulty at the top of their list.

Leeds United must replace Junior Firpo

As the transfer window progresses, it seems as though Leeds have less and less idea of what their squad will look like once the Championship season begins.

The club face an uphill battle to keep Wilfried Gnonto amid interest from several clubs [talkSPORT, 16 July], while Crysencio Summerville is still expected to leave [The Athletic, 27 May] and there will no doubt be more interest in players as the window progresses.

Firpo is someone the club would ideally want to keep for the 2024/25 season with full-back already an area that is desperate for strengthening after summer exits.

But with the Dominican having just one year remaining on his contract at Elland Road the reality is that there is little they can do to keep him if they receive a decent offer.

MacNulty would arguably be a risk, but he is strong with top-flight experience and is also capable of playing at centre-back so could be a shrewd bit of business.

In other Leeds news, the club want to sign an AC Milan defender this summer.
