Leeds United loanee Sam Greenwood delighted with Middlesbrough form

Leeds United loanee Sam Greenwood has hinted at a potential permanent move to Middlesbrough, admitting he is delighted with the way his loan spell is going so far.

Greenwood has two goals in nine Championship appearances so far for Michael Carrick’s side, and by all means, is enjoying his time in the North-East as he targets further success.

The Athletic reported [8 October] that there is a £1.5million option to buy in the deal in place between Middlesbrough and Leeds which could see the forward leave permanently at the end of the season.

Speaking to BBC Tees on 29 October, as reported by Leeds Live, Greenwood expressed his happiness at Middlesbrough, saying: “We just have to keep going now.

“I’m happy with how things are going for me personally right now, but we’re a proper team here. Rather than looking at it as just about me, it’s more important that we focus on the team.

“For me personally, it is going well and I’m really happy, but I’m just focused on helping the team keep pushing. There’s a lot of hard work going into this run, the way we train etc and the hard work is paying off.”

A move looks inevitable

With the release fee in his loan deal at such a low price, combined with his performances under Carrick so far this season and the fact he would be unlikely to find a place in the first-team at Elland Road makes this move look inevitable.

Of course, anything can happen in football. Greenwood could pick up an injury or his form could simply drop off a cliff so Middlesbrough may not use their option to make the loan move permanent, but as things stand it seems he won’t be a Leeds player for much longer.

If he did return to Elland Road rather than staying on Teesside, it’s unlikely Daniel Farke would be able to find a place for him in his side. Goerginio Rutter, Joel Piroe, and Patrick Bamford are just three of the players above Greenwood in the pecking order.

The permanent fee would have been agreed in the deal with Leeds being in full knowledge that he is now surplus to requirements at Elland Road, and that permanent move is looking more and more likely.
