Leeds United-linked Osaze Urhoghide rejects Sheffield Wednesday contact, set to leave

Leeds United-linked Osaze Urhoghide is set to leave Sheffield Wednesday after rejecting a new contract, according to The Examiner.

The Yorkshire news outlet has reported that the 20-year-old has turned down the club’s latest contract offer after months of negotiations.

The Dutch-born defender’s existing deal runs out on June 30 and The Examiner claims he already has his next move lined up.

Leeds have been heavily linked with Urhoghide with the Sheffield Star reporting in March that the Whites were “fluttering their eyelids” at him.

Sheffield Wednesday finished bottom of the 2020/21 Championship table and will ply their trade in the third-tier next season.

The Whites recruitment team have had a keen eye for emerging prospects in recent years.

We nabbed Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt last year, from Arsenal and Wigan Athletic respectively.

That showed it doesn’t matter whether players are at a so-called ‘elite’ club or at one playing in the English Football League, if they’re good enough, we’ll make attempts to sign them.

The aforementioned duo of Greenwood and Gelhardt enjoyed tremendous success with the triumphant Under-23 side in the 2020/21 campaign and caught the eye of Marcelo Bielsa.

That’s likely to be where Urhoghide would start his Whites career, were he to join this summer.

He wasn’t exactly a first-team mainstay for a struggling Sheffield Wednesday side last season but that can probably be explained by their lowly standing, with managers opting to place faith in more experienced heads to cope with mounting pressure.

But there would be no danger of that at Leeds and he would be welcomed into a challenging but rewarding environment.

If our talent-spotters think he’s a potential diamond then who are we to question it, and as a free agent he could be a smart pick-up.
