Leeds United-linked Neco Williams set to demand Liverpool exit

Liverpool defender Neco Williams is ready to hand a transfer request in to force his exit as Leeds United wait in the wings, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims the 20-year-old is “expected to request a transfer” once he returns from international duty with Wales at the European Championships.

Williams will be allowed to leave the six-time Champions League winners for £10million this summer, as first reported by The Athletic’s James Pearce earlier this week [21/06/21], with Leeds among the sides to have made an approach [Goal].

One for the future

Williams only turned 20 in April, but he has already made 12 Premier League appearances for the Merseyside giants and played four times in the Champions League.

Remarkably, he also has 13 international caps to his name for Wales, making his full debut in October 2020 and being praised by WalesOnline [via Liverpool Echo] for his “rampaging” runs forwards.

The Wrexham-born right-back also scored his first international goal against Bulgaria in September 2020.

He’s made two outings at Euro 2020 so far, appearing as a late substitute against Turkey before starting against European heavyweights Italy last Sunday [25/06/21].

However, despite accumulating a wealth of experience for a player his age, there are doubts that he would be able to establish himself in the starting XI of a top-ten club in the Premier League, as we are now.

Williams was given the runaround against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last year, while his only Liverpool start since January was a 1-0 home defeat to Fulham.

He’s certainly a huge talent that Marcelo Bielsa can mould into one of the best around in the coming years, but we don’t think he would be troubling the Whites starting XI next season if he arrived at Elland Road this summer.

Luke Ayling was one of our most consistent performers in the 2020/21 campaign and looks to have the right-back slot locked down, while we are sure to sign a natural left-back regardless of Ezgjan Alioski’s contractual situation.

It would be a smart move, though, to ensure we have cover at full-back next season while keeping an eye on the future.

In other Leeds United news, Marcelo Bielsa has ordered the Whites to move for this Euro 2020 ace who helped shutout Mbappe last week.
