Leeds United likely to pay three £6.17m instalments as Jean-Kevin Augustin case reviewed by CAS – Sky Germany

It is likely that Leeds United will be made to pay three instalments of £6.17million (€7.35million), totalling £18.51million, to RB Leipzig after the case regarding Jean-Kevin Augustin was reviewed by CAS, according to Sky Sports Germany.

The German broadcaster claims that Leipzig can expect the major pay-off from the Whites to arrive “in the coming weeks” after the Yorkshire club failed to sign Augustin, 24, permanently in 2020.

It is understood that when Leeds signed Augustin initially on loan from Leipzig in January 2020, they also agreed an obligation to buy him permanently for £17.6million if they won promotion.

Leeds did win the Championship title but refused to pay up for Augustin, who now plays for Nantes, as the COVID-enforced break of the 2020/21 season meant the striker’s loan at Elland Road expired before the campaign ended.

Sky Sports Germany now claims that Leeds might have to pay three instalments of £5.8million, plus £317,000 to each instalment due to interest.

Huge blow

Leeds have properly messed up here if this is the case because it would have been way more beneficial to just sign Augustin rather than go to all of these lengths.

While Leeds are likely to be preaching about the technicalities of Augustin’s loan-to-buy agreement at Elland Road, the fact of the matter is that the season ended with the club winning promotion.

Therefore, whether or not Augustin’s loan expired or not, the obligation-to-buy clause was in effect and he should’ve been purchased.

That’s what it sounds like, anyway.

Leeds and Leipzig will have fought their cases at the Court of Arbitration for Sport yesterday (15 March) and just because Sky Sports Germany is saying one thing, doesn’t mean it’s nailed-on to happen.

But we have been worrying over this for a while and Leeds’ defence, in our opinion, doesn’t stack up too well.
