Leeds United learn condition for full Joe Rothwell transfer amid £7.5m reveal

Leeds United will only be able to sign Joe Rothwell permanently for around £7.5million if they win promotion this season, according to TEAMtalk.

The online outlet reported on 4 February that United would struggle to complete a permanent deal for the Bournemouth loanee, and his £30,000 weekly wages, if they remain a Championship club next term.

Regardless of if the Whites seal promotion to the Premier League or not at season’s end, Bournemouth’s asking price is likely to remain unchanged, with £7.5m expected to be enough to convince them to sell.

Joe Rothwell transfer a no-brainer for Leeds United

Even if the worst happens between now and May to leave Leeds consigned to the second-tier for a third year running, Rothwell is still a player who should be on United’s radar in the summer transfer window.

Entering the final year of his Bournemouth contract and clearly not in the Cherries’ plans, United could do much worse than bringing Rothwell back to LS11 next season regardless of the league they’re in.

The 30-year-old is quietly racking up the appearances for the Peacocks having looked to be on the periphery at the start of the campaign, with 20 Championship starts and eight substitute appearances.

He’s yet to find the net unlike his usual midfield partner Ao Tanaka, and while the Japanese international has quickly become undroppable in the eyes of fans, Rothwell’s displays have gone under the radar.

Everything at Elland Road rests on promotion to the Premier League in 2025, and with Rothwell as one of Daniel Farke’s most trusted midfield options, £7.5m will be a worthwhile snip if they get there.
