Leeds United: Kalvin Phillips ‘needs to’ return to Elland Road in Manchester City verdict

Kalvin Phillips has been told he needs to return to Leeds United from Manchester City this summer to get his career back on track as he will want consistent game time.

Dom Matteo has insisted the midfielder needs to get back to the form he had shown previously at Elland Road which earned him a regular place in the England squad.

He went on to explain that he will need to regain his confidence and match fitness by being part of a team where the fans will get behind him and lend him their support.

Speaking to Football League World [9 April], Matteo shared: “Kalvin Phillips was superb for Leeds, he gave everything and it showed in his performances which got him an England call-up and he became a hugely valuable member of the England squad.

“Since the move to Manchester City, Phillips hasn’t played a lot and this isn’t good for the type of player Phillips is. He needs to be playing regularly and this hasn’t been the case. It’s all well being part of the Manchester City set-up, but Phillips needs game time.

“The loan to West Ham isn’t going as he would have wished and a move back to Leeds United could be a welcome one, for him to regain his confidence, match fitness and be part of a team where the fans will be on his side when he puts in the type of performances he gave in his first spell.”

Kalvin Phillips urged to return to Leeds United this summer

Talk about a move back to Elland Road first seemed like an easy connection to make, and not much more than that, but as time goes by and the reports continue to come, it seems a return could well be on the cards.

It was suggested that Leeds are ready to bid £30million to secure the midfielder’s signature if they are promoted to the Premier League this summer – £12million less than the fee they received for his sale.

Comparisons could be drawn to the likes of Wilfried Zaha at Crystal Palace who had a torrid time at Manchester United before returning to the South London outfit and making huge strides forward in his career at a club where he was loved and adored.

After struggling away at both Manchester City and West Ham, a return to a club where he is loved and supported could be exactly what he needs to rebuild his confidence and get himself back into the England set-up.
