Leeds United ready new January transfer window bid for Everton defender Ben Godfrey

Leeds United are preparing an improved offer to land Ben Godfrey before the January transfer window closes, according to Carlton Palmer.

Everton are reported to have knocked back the Whites’ approach over a loan offer ahead of the transfer window closing on Thursday (1 February).

However, speaking to Football League World [31 January], former United midfielder Palmer said it is vital Leeds get a deal over the line for a new defender.

“Leeds United have had an initial loan offer for Everton defender Ben Godfrey rejected,” he said.

“Sean Dyche and Everton have given the green light for the centre-back to leave the club, as they look to reduce their wage bill.

“Leeds are keen to land Godfrey and are preparing an improved offer in a bid to agree a late deal.

“With Leo Hjelde joining Sunderland, it is imperative Leeds bring in defensive reinforcements of the calibre that can see Leeds gain an automatic push for second place behind Leicester City before the window closes.”

Could prove the difference

Leeds could really do with bringing in another defender, as Palmer says, and Godfrey would certainly tick plenty of boxes.

The 26-year-old started Everton’s 0-0 draw with Fulham on Tuesday (30 January), but that was just his second Premier League start this season.

Everton understandably knocked back Leeds’ loan offer – that would suit them in no way – although they appear to be more open to offloading should money be tabled.

Godfrey is as versatile as they come, and it will likely be at full-back he is best utilised should he arrive at Elland Road.

Leeds United

United have been linked with many defenders throughout the window, but Godfrey may just be the one they now focus on in these closing stages.

Bringing in a new player at the back could well prove the difference between automatic promotion or the play-offs from Leeds’ perspective.

With Everton seemingly willing to sell, let’s just hope an agreement can be reached before the deadline comes and goes.

In other Leeds United news, a journalist says there is now a “realistic possibility” of the Whites pulling off a certain transfer.
