Leeds United: Ivan Toney set for new Brentford contract with release clause

Ivan Toney is set to be offered a bumper new deal at Brentford that includes a “hefty” release clause, amid interest from Leeds according to The Mirror.

The Whites were linked with a move for the former Newcastle and Peterborough striker in the summer after failing in moves for Arnaud Kalimuendo and Charles De Ketelaere.

But a deal never materialised for Toney, who also attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United and he stayed with the Bees in west London.

Now a new report [10 October] claims that Brentford are set to reward his excellent form with a new contract worth north of £100,000 per week but will include a release clause, to keep him happy at the club.

Toney signed for the club in 2020 and hasn’t penned any new terms since despite establishing himself as one of the best strikers in the country, with his current deal set to expire in 2025.

Interesting

Leeds are still in need of a striker, despite Patrick Bamford being healthy again and the signing of Willy Gnonto on deadline day in the summer.

Currently the squad is scoring goals but they’re nowhere near as clinical as they should be and a player with the quality of Toney would likely take this side up a level.

A hefty release clause being included in the deal means that Toney would likely be open to an exit if the right opportunity presented itself, and the fact that Bamford has earned an England cap while being at Elland Road means he may be happy with the move.

We know the club have money to spend after targeting De Ketelaere and Cody Gakpo this summer, so Toney could well be a target during the January window.

The fans likely wouldn’t be against the signing despite the mini rivalry that has brewed between the clubs recently, and it would be a huge statement if they managed to bring him in.
