Leeds United in hunt to sign Anselmo Garcia MacNulty as Southampton transfer update emerges

Leeds United are reportedly interested in PEC Zwolle defender Anselmo Garcia MacNulty, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The report on 2 May reveals that a number of other English clubs are also tracking the 21-year-old, including Leicester City and Southampton.

There is also competition for his signature in Europe, with Real Betis and Club Brugge also named as admirers of MacNulty.

Anselmo Garcia MacNulty could be an astute signing for Leeds United

MacNulty possesses a number of tangible and intangible qualities that have attracted so much attention ahead of the summer transfer window.

His versatility is among them – he has been used at left-back for the majority of the campaign, but his best position is undoubtedly as a central defender.

Left-footed centre-backs are a rare and valuable commodity in the modern game and Leeds clearly value that quality, boasting two such players in Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper. However, with the latter’s contract set to expire at the end of this season, the Whites could be tempted to replace their long-serving captain with a promising young star 11 years his junior.

Additionally, despite his tender years, MacNulty boasts a surprising wealth of experience. Since leaving Wolfsburg’s academy for NAC Breda at the age of just 19, the 21-year-old has racked up 67 first-team appearances across the top two tiers of Dutch football.

His unique cultural blend also adds to the intrigue around him. Born in Seville to a Spanish father and an Irish mother, he spent his formative years in Real Betis’ academy before moving to Germany and, subsequently, the Netherlands.

If Leeds can beat out the competition, they will have acquired a terrific young prospect.
