Leeds United in hot pursuit of MLS goal machine Sebastian Driussi after 25-goal season

Leeds United are one of three Premier League clubs in the hunt to sign Austin FC attacker Sebastian Driussi, according to Nico Cantor.

The CBS Sports journalist reported via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night (8 November) that Driussi, 26, is “highly sought after” following an incredible season in MLS.

Texas-based Austin FC signed the Argentinean forward after he bought himself out of his contract at Russian club Zenit St Petersburg in July 2021.

49ers strike again?

We’ve had Jesse Marsch, Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson all join Leeds this year after the 49ers upped their shareholding at Elland Road to 44 per cent last November.

It’s no coincidence that the US influence is growing and while Driussi isn’t an American himself, he has been absolutely tearing it up Stateside since joining Austin.

In the 2022 season, which has just ended in the USA, Driussi scored 25 goals and supplied six assists in 38 appearances across all competitions for The Oaks.

According to Cantor, his performances saw him earn a spot in the MLS team of the season.

Austin’s head coach Josh Wolff, as quoted by transfermarkt, dubbed the ex-Zenit attacker “a phenomenal and versatile player who will elevate our attack and make us more dangerous going forward”.

Driussi can play mainly as an attacking midfielder but he can also play off a centre-forward or as an out-and-out striker himself. And his goal record in the States more than suggests he’s capable of doing that regularly.

Leeds do need goals and while Driussi’s numbers in MLS are encouraging, you have to remember there’s a huge difference between that league and the Premier League.

Some have come from the States and succeeded and as we’re seeing with Miguel Almiron, formerly of Atlanta United, at Newcastle, some take their time.

If we can sign Driussi on a cheap deal, we wouldn’t be against it but we would err on the side of caution if he does arrive at Elland Road in January.

In other Leeds United news, Marsch hit back at Gary Lineker on Match of the Day after a suggestive question was asked.
