Leeds United in hot pursuit of Lens central midfielder Seko Fofana

Leeds United are among the clubs interested in signing Lens central midfielder Seko Fofana this month, according to Sebastien Denis.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night, the editor-in-chief of Foot Mercato reported that there is “real interest” in the 26-year-old Ivory Coast international from Leeds, Burnley and Newcastle.

It is understood that Newcastle’s interest is the “hottest”.

Denis adds that if an offer of £14.1million is made for Fofana, it will be kicked into touch by Lens.

Last month, Jeunes Footeux reported that the Ligue 1 outfit would want at least £25million for the former Manchester City and Fulham midfielder.

Just what we need

Leeds need to strengthen their midfield options before the January transfer window closes and Fofana comes across as a perfect addition to Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Described as a “complete” player by Lens manager Franck Haise [Newcastle World], Fofana is not only someone who could add depth to Bielsa’s midfield options but also add a lot of quality and a potential first name on the teamsheet.

The Paris-born Ivorian has been in stunning form at Lens this season.

He’s made 22 appearances in all competitions for Lens this term, wearing the captain’s armband for most of them, and scored seven goals.

One of those goals came last month in a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain while a brace against reigning Ligue 1 champions Lille in the Coupe De France helped Lens reach the fifth round of the competition.

Stats by WhoScored show that Fofana incredibly ranks seventh in Ligue 1 for shots at goal per match [2.7], which is more than players like Dimitri Payet, Angel Di Maria and Jonathan David.

What’s even more astounding is that Fofana averages 2.2 dribbles per match, which ranks him eighth in Ligue 1. In seventh, is Lionel Messi with 2.3 per game.

Fofana’s pass completion is also 90.3 per cent, which is the 20th best in France’s top-flight.

It’s clear that this midfielder offers a goal threat, an ability to create and an ability to link up with his teammates.

Leeds, sign him.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this Portuguese left-back from a club in the North-West.
