Leeds United in fast-moving talks for Georginio Rutter to stay, U-turn on the cards
Leeds United have not given up on keeping Georginio Rutter after Brighton triggered the forward’s £40million release clause, according to Ben Jacobs.
The football journalist reported via his X account on Thursday (15 August) that Leeds “are doing everything in their power to try and keep” the 22-year-old, even though Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg had earlier claimed that he’d decided to leave for Brighton.
Jacobs adds that Leeds are now in fast-moving talks on Thursday to try and counter Brighton’s bid by offering the Frenchman an improved contract.
Georginio Rutter transfer U-turn on the cards at Leeds United?
Let’s face it, stranger things have happened in the transfer window – especially with Leeds.
Rutter’s £40million release clause was triggered by a Premier League club that has had nothing but good words said about them for the last half a decade.
Brighton are definitely one of the success stories of English football in recent years so why wouldn’t Rutter want to leave a Championship club to join them?
Sure, Leeds are a club with a bigger fanbase and more stunning history. But that doesn’t pave over the fact that Brighton are established in the top flight, will challenge for Europe next season and just seem to do absolutely everything right.

The opposite is true for Leeds. With Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray already gone and six goals conceded in two winless games at Elland Road to start the season, things aren’t exactly bright and cheery in West Yorkshire.
Leeds have every right to convince Rutter to stay by offering him a fresh deal but they knew this release clause could be triggered and they didn’t seem to get anything done until it was too late.
