Leeds United in advanced talks to sign Junior Firpo from Barcelona
Leeds United are in advanced talks to sign Junior Firpo from Barcelona in a deal worth £12.8million, according to Marca.
The Spanish news outlet claims Firpo, 24, isn’t in Ronald Koeman’s plans for next season and the Barca manager is willing to get rid of the Dominican full-back, who made 18 appearances in all competitions last term.
Sport has previously reported that once Leeds and Barca agree a deal – which could happen in the next couple of days – Firpo will sign his contract.
Another new arrival close
On Monday, Leeds confirmed the arrival of Amari Miller from Birmingham City and it looks as though Victor Orta has been a busy man in recent days with a deal for Firpo also close to completion.
All the signs are pointing towards Firpo joining the Whites soon as they aim to solve the left-back issue, which could be made even worse if Ezgjan Alioski leaves Elland Road this week.
Alioski’s contract expires at the end of Wednesday and although it’s been widely reported the club would be open to him staying, the North Macedonian is yet to sign a new deal.
While Alioski has been a superb servant for the Yorkshire club, we would not hold it again him if he opts to move on and get regular game-time elsewhere because we have no doubt that Firpo will be Marcelo Bielsa’s first-choice left-back next season.
It’s not every day you see Leeds signing a first-team player from Barcelona and although he was deemed as surplus to requirements, it’s fairly obvious that he will be a mainstay of Bielsa’s team next term.
Firpo is an attack-minded left-back who, very importantly, is a natural in his role and is used to playing against top attackers.
That’s where Alioski struggled last season and we feel it’s where Firpo will prove himself to be a major upgrade.
