Leeds United: Ian Poveda exit update as Sheffield Wednesday loanee eyed by Birmingham City

Ian Poveda has no way back in at Leeds United and will leave the club at the end of the season, according to TEAMtalk.

The outlet reported on their website on 13 March that sources have “confirmed” the Colombian international has no chance of returning to Elland Road once his contract expires in the summer.

Poveda, 24, made 10 appearances under Daniel Farke earlier this term but joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan for the rest of the campaign in January, and his next move is expected to either be to sign for the Owls permanently or winter suitors Birmingham City.

Therefore the winger has already played his last game for the Whites, when he came off the bench in the 1-1 FA Cup draw at Plymouth Argyle on 27 January.

Leeds United will not be back at Elland Road

It isn’t a great surprise that Poveda’s time at the club is over given he was allowed to leave on a similar January loan arrangement to Luke Ayling that sees out his contract.

He has been a regular at Hillsborough as the relegation-threatened Owls have turned into strong form in recent weeks but missed the 2-0 Whites in last week as he couldn’t play against his parent club.

The former Manchester City player is one of many who haven’t panned out as hoped after arriving in West Yorkshire with lofty expectations but has impressed at Wednesday.

After previous Championship loans to Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool it appears he is best suited to the second tier.

Crysencio Summerville is likely to leave Leeds United

But despite sporadic involvement in the first half of the season he never got a true chance to show that once Leeds United were actually back in the Championship thanks to the club having such an embarrassment of riches at his position.

Even after the departures of Luis Sinisterra and Jack Harrison in the summer Daniel Farke was left with two of the season’s star men in Crysencio Summerville and Dan James, as well as the important Willy Gnonto and Bournemouth loanee Jaidon Anthony, so it was always going to be tough for anyone else to force their way through.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are now at risk of a profit and sustainability breach after developments this week.
