Leeds United given unexpected hope of signing Jonathan Rowe after late-night twist

Leeds United must take full advantage and make a fresh move for Norwich City gem Jonathan Rowe amid a transfer twist involving Marseille.

The Whites thought they had missed out on the 21-year-old when their initial £7million bid was knocked back [The Sun, 9 August].

Marseille then pounced with a bid of their own which was expected to be enough for Norwich to agree terms on a sale.

However, Sky Sports reported in a late-night update on their live transfer blog [9 August, 10:44pm] that there has been another development.

Marseille fall short with Jonathan Rowe bid

The Ligue 1 side’s opening offer is expected to fall short of Norwich’s valuation and is set to be turned down by the Canaries.

The update adds that Marseille will continue talks with Norwich, who would rather keep the player, but Leeds are also still keen on a deal.

If Rowe is indeed the man earmarked to replace Crysencio Summerville at Elland Road – or at least try to – then the Whites must move now.

That is not to say the club should pay way over the odds for the England Under-21s international, but he is clearly a player they like.

Leeds United have money to spend

The sales of Archie Gray and Summerville in particular have brought in plenty of funds so far this summer.

And in Rowe, a player described as being capable of “magic” by Norwich colleague Shane Duffy, Leeds can bring in a quality addition.

Rowe has showed what he can do in the Championship, having scored 12 goals and assisted two more in 32 outings last season.

Many expected this transfer saga to be over when Marseille entered the fray, but that is clearly not the case.

Now is the time for United to make an improved offer that matches Norwich’s valuation in order to seal this deal.

In other Leeds United news, Graham Smyth has suggested a player may not be as committed to the club as Daniel Farke thinks he is.
