Leeds United haven’t spoken to Max Wober about Elland Road future amid Gladbach loan spell

Max Wober has confirmed that he hasn’t spoken to anyone at Leeds United about where he will play his football next season after a loan spell with Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The Austria defender has spent this season in the Bundesliga and become a key player for the German side, but his loan spell is due to end in the summer and he still has another three years to run on his contract at Elland Road.

Gladbach are said to want to make the deal permanent but Leeds are demanding a fee deemed too high currently, and speaking to BILD (15 April) the defender confirmed that nobody has spoken to him about his future in a while.

“I haven’t heard from Gladbach in a while, they will also be squad planning for next season,” he said.

“I’m curious whether anyone from Gladbach will come to me – or from Leeds too. Nobody has talked to me yet.”

“Leeds are in the middle of a promotion fight, they have better things to do at the moment than talking to their loan players about their future.”

BILD also spoke to Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus, who confirmed the Austria international’s information and explained the situation a bit more.

“We were in talks with Max, but there hasn’t been an exchange recently – because Leeds aren’t moving,” he said.

“The problem is that if we don’t reach an agreement with Leeds then it will be difficult to move on. At the moment it’s just that the numbers are quite high.”

Do Leeds United need Max Wober next season?

The reason Leeds haven’t spoken to Wober or any of their other loanees about next season yet is because this season isn’t over.

As it stands the Whites don’t know what division they will be playing in in the 2024/25 campaign, and that no doubt has a huge impact on their plans for the season.

Should Daniel Farke find a way to guide his team back to the Premier League at the first time of asking then there is a chance that players like Wober could come back into the fold at Elland Road, with their quality noted and the fact there won’t be exit clauses in their contracts playing a part too.

Once the club know whether they are coming or going then they can start to hold talks, but there is no rush. The transfer window isn’t even open yet.

Wober and Gladbach may want to plan right now, but Leeds are the ones in the driving seat and until they know what is happening everyone else just has to wait.
